Stolen Credit Card Information Used to Steal Nearly $62,000 from Local ATMs

(LUBBOCK, TX) - Lubbock Police Department detectives with the Forgery Squad are investigating a case involving hundreds of stolen credit and debit card numbers from victims across Texas.

Between January 10th and January 14th, a suspect or suspects, used stolen credit and debit card information to withdraw money from Vista Bank and First Capital Bank ATMs in Lubbock and branches in other cities. A total of nearly $62,000 was taken from local ATMs using stolen card information.

Detectives believe the credit and debit card information was stolen through the use of card skimmers placed in locations like gas pumps in other cities. That information was then used to create cloned credit and debit cards.

LPD detectives are now working to identify the hundreds of victims who had money taken out of their accounts at local ATMs using the stolen information.

Some of the victims may be from the South Plains area; however, it is likely the majority of the victims live in other parts of Texas. While the card information was used at Vista and First Capital Bank ATMs, the victims may bank at other businesses.

Detectives are asking the public to be vigilant and review their bank accounts to check if there are any unauthorized ATM withdraws from Vista or First Capital Bank. If there are, please contact the investigators at 806-775-2814.

This case remains under investigation by LPD’s Forgery Squad, Crime Suppression Squad and federal partners.
