The public is invited to attend the closing reception for Lonesome Dove on Sunday, March 22, 2026, from 2:00–3:00 PM. This FREE event offers visitors a final opportunity to experience the exhibition before it concludes. Dr. Landon Lutrick, specializing in Western literature, will give a talk at 2:00 PM, exploring the differences between novel and miniseries. Moving beyond cinematic themes, this talk will examine the rise of author Larry McMurtry, the anticipation and success of the novel, and how the miniseries came to life. We’ll explore what changed from page to screen, what was streamlined or left out, and how each medium tells the story differently. Through side-by-side comparisons, we’ll consider what each version does best and invite you to decide: are you loyal to the book, or the miniseries?
Guests are encouraged to arrive early for the 2:00 PM talk. Light refreshments will be available throughout the reception.
